Protect Winchester Students

Make sure your Town Meeting reps vote YES to hold the line for our schools

We're done (for now)

Winchester's Spring 2026 Town Meeting is complete. The three school-related articles supported below (the Muraco feasibility study, the new literacy curriculum, and the FY27 school budget) all passed unanimously. This site remains available as a record of this campaign.

While we secured what we needed from Town Meeting, Winchester's schools still have a long way to go to reach a sufficient and sustainable level of funding. More advocacy work is ahead of us, including a critical second override attempt prior to the next budget cycle.

Where We Stand

  • Winchester ranks in the bottom third for per-pupil spending in the state.
  • Despite relatively low spending, Winchester is among the top school districts in the state, largely thanks to the dedicated teachers and staff who show up for our students every day.
  • Due to the failed March override and broader economic pressures, the School Department will be forced to make difficult cuts.
  • We must stand up for our students and teachers to limit the damage of budget pressures and keep our schools strong. Specifically, we must ensure passage of three Town Meeting articles:
    1. Muraco Feasibility Study (Article 27) — Passed unanimously April 30th
    2. New Literacy Curriculum (Article 28) — Passed unanimously May 4th
    3. FY27 School Budget at 4.4% (Article 29) — Passed unanimously May 7th
  • Winchester can afford to fund all three articles with barely a dent to our reserves.

The failed override and rising mandatory costs have left a significant funding gap. Even the agreed-upon 4.4% budget requires cutting 32.5 staff positions. We must secure Town Meeting's support to prevent even more drastic reductions.

A 2024 Boston Globe investigation found Winchester using a low-quality curriculum. After a two-year evaluation process culminating in a pilot this school year, Article 28 funds the full rollout of the chosen program.

Muraco Elementary is nearly 60 years old and requires a complete rebuild. Article 27 funds the feasibility study needed to unlock millions in MSBA state reimbursement. Passing it now keeps the rebuild on track for a 2030 opening with 30+% reimbursement from the state.
